What a kitchen fitter does, and what they don't

The Home Upgrade Co.'s Dublin page is a clear example of the line most companies draw. Its fitters install the units, doors, worktops, splashbacks and appliance housings. It doesn't do structural building work, and it doesn't rewire or replumb to move services: you arrange those separately, and the quote flags how they affect the fit.

That matters most if you're moving the sink or the cooker. Electrical work must be done by a Registered Electrical Contractor and gas work by a Registered Gas Installer, and each must hand you a completion certificate (CRU). Aloco Kitchens puts plumbing at €500 to €1,500 and electrics at €500 to €2,000.

How long fitting takes

  • The fitting itself: 3 to 5 days (Aloco Kitchens).
  • The whole project: 2 to 3 weeks, or 4 to 6 weeks for bespoke.
  • The wait before it: a made-to-measure kitchen is fitted about 12 weeks after you sign off the design at The Home Upgrade Co., which visits to design within 2 working days of contact.
  • A respray instead: 1 to 3 days on site (Dublin Kitchen Respray).

What to ask a Dublin kitchen fitter before you sign

  • Is VAT in the price, and at what rate?
  • Who removes the old kitchen and pays for the skip? Aloco Kitchens puts waste removal and delivery to a Dublin job at €500 to €1,000.
  • Who does the electrics and any gas, and will you get their completion certificates?
  • Who measures and templates the worktop, and how long after fitting does it go in?
  • Is the warranty written on the quote? The Home Upgrade Co. writes a 2-year warranty on its wood products onto the quote.
